The Services to Youth Committee, which is one of the program facets of Greater Huntsville Chapter of the Links, Incorporated, conducted a Life Skills Program at the Boys and Girls Teen Center on Holmes Avenue in Huntsville, Alabama from February 2011 to April 2011. The program was started in an effort to educate youth about the dangers of substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV/AIDS. Youth participating in the program were 12-15 years old.
The conceptualization for the program was brought before the Services to Youth Committee by Stephanie Bell. Stephanie is a licensed Social Worker for the Department of Human Resources in Huntsville, Al and Program Coordinator for Greater Huntsville Chapter of the Links, Incorporated.
Each week, dynamic speakers from the community, who are authorities in their respective fields, conveyed valuable information to the youth at the
At the conclusion of the Life Skills Program, the youth were presented with Certificates of Completion. In addition, Mrs. Cynthia Harrison (Aids Action Coalition) conducted free, voluntary, and private HIV/AIDS testing for the youth.
The Services to Youth Committee also started a tutoring program at Banks-Caddell Elementary School in Decatur, Alabama. This program was started in an effort to help prepare 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students for the Alabama Reading and Math Test (ARMT)/ Stanford Achievement Test-tenth edition (SAT-10) which will be administered in March 2011.
The Services to Youth Committee met at Banks-Caddell and worked intensively with students on reading and math activities that greatly mirrored the state assessments. Students were taught various test-taking strategies in preparation for the high-stakes test.
The tutoring program started in January 2011 and culminated on March 17, 2011 with a pizza party for the program participants. Each student received an “Outstanding Student” Certificate for their completion of the program.
The Services to Youth Committee consist of the following Links: Yvette Evans (chair), Gloria Evans (co-chair), Elizabeth Brown, Constance Dees, Sandra Dickerson, Abbiegail Hugine, Loretta Gilliam, Evelyn Rich, Gwendolyn Rowland, M. Jeneene Suttle, and Geraldine Taylor. Link Gertrude Hicks (who serves on the committee for The Arts) also participated.
